We are excited to offer a unique program to engage our teens at Temple Emanuel after becoming B'nai Mitzvah. Our PASSPORT program is a travel-based fellowship where teens will have a variety of creative leadership development tracks - each culminating in a fun, experiential trip led by clergy and senior staff later in the year. We recognize that your teens' schedules are filled to the brim, and we want their time at Temple Emanuel to enrich their preparation for college and the bright futures ahead of them. We've transformed out post-B'nai mitzvah programming to address the limited time of teens and tier need to build their resumes for college by shifting from a confirmation-centered curriculum to PASSPORT. This one-of-a-kind leadership-development fellowship meets the needs for young students where they are, and offers them a chance to build their Jewish identities through travel and shared experiences. Your teens will have the opportunity to participate in several different themed tracks, explored through monthly meetings, including in a multi-day travel experience. Eighth graders will all apply to the same track (see below), and 9th-12th graders will be invited to choose from between two options, to be expanded in future years.

Paving a Path to Justice: This track offers students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to explore their Jewish identities by encountering the history of the civil rights movement in America, and exploring the Jewish imperative to pursue justice. By studying the people and events of the civil rights movement in America and engaging with Jewish texts and values, participants will be challenged to integrate a commitment to social justice into their Jewish identities. In the spring, the program will culminate in a four-day journey to Atlanta, Montgomery, Birmingham and Selma for a guided, close-up experience of the history of the civil rights movement. Trip dates: April 26, 2018 - April 29, 2018.

Teen Civic Leadership Council: Students are invited to learn the ins and outs of being a community leader with a Jewish lens. We have built a nationally-celebrated partnership with the Religious Action Center (RAC). Each year, teens select an issue that engages their intellect and passion, learn from experts in the field, lobby, and engage in non-profit advocacy and philanthropy. From January 19-22, 2018, the students take a 4-day trip to Washington, D.C. to meet and learn with over two thousand teens from across the country, through the RAC's L'Taken Social Justice seminar. For students in grades 9-12.

In which PASSPORT program will you participate?

Teen Civic Leadership Council for 9th-12th graders $1,000.00
